But before you do check out what Emily had to say when I quizzed her with a few questions about her wedding florist business journey and she offers some great tips!
How long have you been in the wedding business?
My journey into the world of weddings and flowers started back in 2014 with my own wedding. I'd done what any bride-to-be does and Pinterested my way through planning, opting to DIY where I could to save a few pennies. I spent every minute I wasn't working doing wedmin!
Did you always want to work in the wedding industry?
Thirteen days after our wedding whilst enjoying our honeymoon in Italy, we had to rush home to say our final goodbyes to my father-in-law who sadly passed away from Motor Neurone Disease. It was at that point that everything changed. My eyes were opened to how much time & energy I'd wasted on pointless aspects of wedding planning when I should have been with my loved ones. I wished I'd had at least one supplier who'd have cut the crap and told me like it is. Your wedding might feel like the most important day of your life, but in the grand scheme of things, no amount of confetti will make it any more than what it should be - a declaration of love.
Fast forward to 2017, one baby later and pregnant with my second, I'd begun to think about what I could do to avoid returning to my retail management job. A Christmas wreath making workshop sparked something creative in me and I began private floristry tuition. And so a love of flowers, the need to right a few wrongs in the wedding industry & my business brain collided and Thatch & Roses Flower Studio was born.
Do you remember your first wedding?
My very first wedding was in August 2018 for two close friends, pretty much for cost price! I vividly remember dressing the marquee poles while my 11-week old baby waited patiently in his pram at the bottom of the ladder for me to come and feed him. And since then the business has grown far faster than I could have imagined & I really feel like great things are to come - although 2020 is certainly testing my business capabilities!
Do you have a favourite venue or type of wedding?
I'm a recommended supplier for Unique Norfolk Venues who have several properties each with their own characteristics, but I also love a marquee wedding like at Chippenham Park as it gives you a blank canvas to work with. My bespoke clients get much more in-depth design & styling services that consider the entire concept of their wedding. A wedding should be much more than a colour palette it should reflect who you are as a couple.
Whats your mission?
My whole mission is to provide breathtaking florals for couples who understand there's more to life. Yes they want an amazing wedding, and they appreciate great flowers, but they also know that if you stripped all the 'stuff' away their day would still be fabulous.
Whats your top wedding florist tip?
I do think couples try & spread what money they do have too thinly. Don't try & do everything, focus on what is important to you & spend wisely. I believe my couples get much more value with flowers when they do one thing with impact rather than try & put a small number of flowers everywhere.
For those looking to book their wedding flowers what are the things they need to be aware of?
Most couples underestimate how much quality wedding flowers cost. I think is partly because most have never planned a wedding before so they have no comparison but also because they see flowers in the supermarkets. But one wedding is a week's work for me on top of all the planning & organisation in advance. You're not just paying for flowers you're getting my creativity, my skills & the knowledge that everything will be taken care of. And of course, my flowers don't come from the supermarket!
My work is predominantly free from floral foam (I don't remember the last time I used it) as it really isn't good for the environment & I also have lots of lovely sources for British grown flowers. However, I source whatever it takes to bring the dreams of a couple to life so it's nice to be able to access resources from around the globe.
What does Thatch & Roses offer?
Thatch & Roses Flower Studio provides wedding flowers for everyone offering a service to suit everyone. My Bespoke service is for couples who want it all, they desire a collaborative approach and unique designs with one to one service. I offer Wedding Packages, which is a simple order online approach & then there's the Flower School where I can teach you to do your own wedding flowers!
Finally, where can people find out more information about what you do?
The best place to see examples of my work would probably be Instagram (@thatchandroses) which is where I tend to spend most of my time. I also have a website thatchandroses.com which gives you a bit more info about what I do.
I'm easily contactable so send me a DM on Instagram, email or give me a call if you'd like to chat about your wedding!
